How to Disable Geolocation in Specific Programs

Geolocation is a rather secret feature of some browsers and toolbars. It allows the creator of that program to get a fix on the location of your computer to within a few meters of where you actually live.

- Facebook (initially just for the iPhone client):
• Goto Privacy Settings
• Click ā€˜Custom’
• Click ā€˜Custom Settings’
• Disable ā€˜Places I check in’
• Disable ā€˜People here now’
• Disable ā€˜Friends can check me in to places’

 - Google Chrome:
• Goto the ā€˜Customize and control Google Chrome’ icon (the little blue wrench on the top right)
• Goto ā€˜Options’
• Goto ā€˜Under the Bonnet’
• Choose ā€˜Content Settings’
• Choose ā€˜Location’
• Check ā€˜Do not allow any site to track my physical location’

- Mozilla Firefox:
• Type ā€˜about:config’ in the address bar (without the ā€˜ā€™)
• Discard the warning by hitting ā€˜yes’
• [1] Scroll down until you reach ā€˜geo.enabled’ or you can simply search for 'geo.enabled'
• Doubleclick the item and it will change from its default value ā€˜True’ to ā€˜False’
• [2] Scroll down until you reach ā€˜geo.wifi.uri’or you can simply search for 'geo.wifi.uri'
• Rightclick the Value of ā€˜geo.wifi.uri’ and click ā€˜Modify’
• Type in ā€˜localhost’ and hit ā€˜OK’
